If you are familiar with Korean skincare, you may have heard about a 10-step facial routine which results in a Korean glass face. Yes, the Korean stars and models you admire in the movie.
A few months ago, I started looking into the 10-steps and whether they truly make your skin look like a Korean movie star.
So, I decided to give the skincare routine a try for a week and see how I found it at the end of a 7-days tryout.

Step 1: Oil-based cleanser
The first step is cleaning with oil based cleaner. Based on research, oil-based cleansers have its real benefits. It is very effective to clean off oil based substances such as sunscreen or makeup. As you know, water won’t mix with oil but oil can wash off oil.
I tried DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, a product of Japan. This cleansing oil is so gentle for my sensitive skin and also effective to wash away all of my makeup and sunscreen. This cleansing oil is suitable for all skin types. One of the main ingredients is olive oil, which is rich in antioxidants, olive oil maintains the skin’s moisture barrier and helps fight damage caused by free radicals without clogging pores. My skin felt so soothed, refreshed, and balanced.
Step 2: Double-cleansing
This 2nd cleaning involves the water based cleaner to wash off dirt, bacteria and dead skin. This is the step that most of us have been applying.
My top pick is Mutenka Cow Brand Moisturizing Facial Wash (Dry Skin). This brand is very mild and great for anyone who has a sensitive skin. Highly recommended.
Step 3: Exfoliate (twice a week)
Please see my previous post for the benefits of exfoliation and recommended Facial scrubs (link Here)
Step 4: Toner
Toner is essential as it will help maintain the ph balance and soften the skin ….
Please see my previous post for recommended Avène Magic water (Click Here)
Step 5: Essence
Essence is in the family of serum and the context is lighter than Ampoule and serum. It usually contains concentrated ingredients to help hydration and improve penetration. It is used after toner.
Please see the previous post Vitamin C essence (Click Here)
Step 6: Ampoule
Ampoule is in the family of essence and serum. It usually comes in a smaller bottle with high level of concentrated ingredients that target to specific areas such as brightening, dark spot or wrinkle. The texture is usually thicker than essence but lighter than serum.
I used the Mizon Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule (30m) for the purpose of this tryout. This Ampoule has snail extracts and greatly reduce the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines, and troubled skin.
Step 7: Serum
Serum is a most intense treatment that contains the highest level of concentrated ingredients for targeted purposes such as wrinkle, dark spot and etc.
I used the Elizabeth Arden time capsules (Link is Here) in this step as my daily routine as it has anti-aging benefits and wrinkle prevention.
Step 8: Sheet mask
A sheet mask or a facial mask is not foreign to many of us. It is so popular and there are so many kinds in the market.
The sheet is for single use and is usually individually packed (although some come in as multiple sheets in a bag or box). The face mask is made up of variety of materials including papers, fibers or gel types. These sheets are soaked in abundant serums and are very easy to use and convenient. You place a sheet on your face for 10-20 mins and serve as an instant glow and boost to your skin.
It is becoming so popular that the skin care companies are making so many different varieties of mask sheet
I will include in my next post my top 5 picks of facial mask sheets. Please stay tuned.
Step 9: eye cream
It is so vital to use eye cream as the skin around the eye area is very delicate, stretching and sagging. To prevent premature fine lines around eye areas, eye cream contains vitamins and minerals to help moisturize and are important to hydrate, pump the skin and help to prevent wrinkles and reduce the sign of aging.
In my next post, I will share my top picks of eye cream.
Step 10: Moisturiser
Estée Laurier pomegranate moisturizer cream
The final step is moisturizer. It helps moisturize, and lubricates the skin.
Results and Thoughts
I have to admit that it looks quite overwhelming at first. However, when you look a little closer, there are actually only a few extra steps from the daily routine. Most of us are probably practising most of these steps. For example, my usual routine includes the above 7 steps: cleaner-> exfoliating-> toner -> essence —> serum -> eye cream -> moisturizer.
Most likely, the double cleaning is new to many of us including myself. I used to wash my face using a foam or water based lotion cleaner. In summer time or days where I put on makeup and lots of sunscreen, double cleaning makes a huge difference. I could feel my face so clean and so ready to absorb the skin products in the next few steps. This is quite a game changer for me. After I practise double clean, I don’t think I can skip the oil based cleaner.
- The essence, Ampoule and serum are all in the same family and the lines become so blury amongst the three products. Depending on the budget and the time you want to spend on these “concentrated” intensive skin care products, this is entirely a preference and choice. If you go with 3 products in your daily routine, I would highly recommend to wait for a few minutes between each application to make sure the product is fully absorbed.
- There are lots of benefits to applying a facial mask 3 times a week, just like exfoliation. Over exfoliating the skins or over use of facial masks may have negative impacts to your skin such as sensitive skin and dryness. If you want to try a daily facial mask sheet, I suggest looking for a daily use brand and leave on treatment to avoid the need of raising off the essence or serum applied from the early steps.
So you now no longer wonder how these Korean stars look so glamorous and have glass faces….
One last word: Staying healthy is a mindset. If you want glowing and healthy looking skin, you will enjoy this journey.
